(Ultimate) Warrior Wednesday

People who have anxiety have some nasty stigmas: of being weak, of being crybabys, of complaining all day. On this very blog, I have constantly referred to we who have anxiety or depression as “sufferers”.

I understand now that this stigma is dangerous.

We’re not sufferers. We’re warriors. We’re warriors who battle this disease of anxiety and depression every day. We’re warriors fighting against the odds, who wake up and face each day, even when everything in our body tells us to quit.

Because of this, I am making a few changes to this blog.
1. I will no longer refer to those of us who have anxiety or depression as “sufferers”. This stigma is not something we should embrace or use as a crutch. We have to fight to become greater than what we feel we are.

2. I am introducing us to Warrior Wednesday. From now on, on Wednesdays I will be posting either quotes, videos, or photos of or by Warriors, people who are fighting each and every day to rise above their circumstances.

As some of you may know, I’m a huge wrestling geek. And in lieu of all that has been going on in the pro-wrestling world, I am dedicating our first Warrior Wednesday to a man who was nothing less than ultimate: The Ultimate Warrior.

After his explosion of a career in the WWF/WWE, Warrior (born Jim Helwig) dedicated his life to motivational speaking in attempt to inspire others to live fuller, more positive lives.

This past Saturday he was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame, which took place before Wrestlemania 30. The following Monday, he gave a speech on Monday Night Raw. He said:

“…every mans heart one day beats its final beat, his lung breathe their final breath. and if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something that’s larger than life, then his essence, his spirit will be immortalized by the story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him and make the running the man did live forever”

This morning, Warrior collapsed on his way out of an Arizona hotel. He was pronounced dead shortly later, at the age of 54.

In his life, he was chastised for his intense (and sometimes intelligible) mode of speech. But his inspiration is undeniable and he as always encourages that we, in the words of one of his most infamous promos, “load the spaceship with the rocket fuel”; meaning, if something is worth doing, do it to the fullest.

Rest in peace, Warrior. You will be truly missed.
